Conference Chair 2017

Highlights 2017

How we can quantify impact of variance management in early phase development? (tbc)

Georg von Falck is currently Head of Plant & Production Engineering at AVL and has been working in the automotive industry for over 27 years.

Variety managing of systems in operation phase – How to handle variety in self-X systems of Industry 4.0?

Dr.-Ing. Christian Tschirner is Head of Department Digital Engineering and Collaboration at the Fraunhofer Research Institute Mechatronic Systems Design IEM in Paderborn. After studying Industrial Engineering at RWTH Aachen University and Mechanical Engineering at Tsinghua University, Beijing he received his PhD (“Dr.-Ing.”) at Heinz Nixdorf Institute, Paderborn in Systems Engineering. Dr. Tschirner is doing applied research and consulting on deployment strategies for Model-Based Systems Engineering to realize Intelligent Technical Systems. In addition, Dr. Tschirner is Vice President INCOSE Germany („GfSE“) – an international network of Systems Engineers.

The New Virtues of Engineering and the Need for Change in the Engineering Curriculum

Bruce Cameron is the Director of the System Architecture Lab at MIT and a co-founder of Technology Strategy Partners, a consultancy. Previously, Dr. Cameron ran the MIT Commonality study, a 30-firm investigation of platforming returns, which concluded that firms face systemic downward pressure on commonality, partially resulting from challenges capturing the costs of variety.
As a Partner at TSP, Dr. Cameron works with companies to develop strategies for entering new markets, building flexible product lines and achieving cost savings. Dr. Cameron's clients include Fortune 500 firms in high tech, aerospace, transportation, and consumer goods. He has worked with  BP, Sikorsky, Nokia, NSTAR, AMGEN, Verizon, NASA, and Amazon.
At MIT, Dr. Cameron teaches the System Architecture core class for the System Design and Management program, where he has taught over 500 students. Dr. Cameron’s teaching in Sloan Executive Education has been tied for the highest rated Executive Education program at MIT for several years. Additionally, Dr. Cameron is the Faculty Director for MIT’s Architecture and System Engineering online certificate, which has taught over 3500 participants.
Previously, Dr. Cameron worked in high tech and banking, where he built advanced analytics for managing complex development programs. Earlier in his career, he was a system engineer at MDA Space Systems, and has built hardware currently in orbit. He is a past board member of the University of Toronto.
